Despite numerous mistakes from both the state and the church in the implementation of religious education reform in Serbia, one of my respondents in the provincial Serbian city of Pančevo suggested that religious education allowed some of the most contemporary and relevant issues for the youth to be addressed:

Children who are correctly taught, regardless of the religious denomination, will not create false idols [out of] sports clubs, politicians and musicians, and so on. When this idol turns out as a disappointment for children, they are in a state of shock, and then you have a homicide in the stadiums. On the other hand, those who are guided in the right way, no matter the religion, they will not create false idols from other people. From the very beginning, we have flaws in religious education. It was not implemented and embedded in our educational system, and it is just an add-on. Classes are not in the regular class timeframe. Usually, religious study classes are the last or the first class during the daily timeline. We need, probably, more time to make it part of the system and to run smoothly within it. Also, there is the question of cadres, but all in all, it is much better now than it used to be. Better times are coming.
